Market Cross

At the east end of High Street, around the corner from Newtownards Priory.

Sir Hugh Montgomery had the original Market Cross here built in 1636, based on one in Edinburgh. Following its destruction it was replaced in 1666 with the present one. It may have once housed the night watchman, in rather cramped conditions within its roof. It is said locally that it used to ‘flow with wine’ at the birth of a royal baby!
